Golden Geer

This Saturday I received an Honourary Golden Geer from the Engineering Students' Society. It was a real honour, especially given that Golden Geers were given to people like Gary, Paul, Louis and Cole (among a number of others) who I've seen do incredible things for that faculty. I got to shake hands with the Dean of Engineering, and enjoy a great meal at the Faculty Club. Jones, Chelli and Mustafa were all there for added company. While I've never been enrolled in Engineering, and never even thought of being enrolled in Engineering, I've found the Engineers whom I've met on campus to be incredibly welcoming and interesting people. They've consistently had some of the best Councillors (From Brindle and Poon, to Jones and Weppler, to Crossman today), their programming remains top notch, and their recent focus on community outreach with events like the Head Shave is something that a number of other FAs could learn from (indeed, it was a pleasure to see Law running a similar event this year). So while I'm pretty sure that it wasn't for my handbook submissions 3 years ago (for which I was already compensated) it's good to see that some people thought that I've made a contribution to the vibrant community that is Engineering on campus.

Here's the long version of what was read regarding Kyle.

--
Kyle Kawanami, though you probably have never seen him in one of your classes, has been more involved in the Faculty of Engineering than the majority of engineering students. What sets Kyle apart from other involved students is that he is not an engineering student, but rather an Arts graduate who will soon be graduating from the Faculty of Law degree with his second degree from the University of Alberta.

Over the years, Kyle has provided his support for the Faculty in a number of ways.

Most visibly, Kyle has participated in many engineering events, including multiple Country Crusade, and Geer Weeks. A particular distinction for which Kyle can claim credit was the entry of an Arts team in Geer Week 2004. Though the team's
performance was . . . well . . . not particularly successful, it was nonetheless remarkable that a Faculty other than Engineering would participate in Geer Week. Kyle Kawanami earned much respect for organizing this team.

Beyond events, Kyle has also provided support to Engineering in more understated ways.

As a member of the UofA Debate Society, Kyle has tutored several of our Engineering debate teams before their regional and national competitions. UofA Engineering debators have won medals at the Western Engineering Competition in 2003, and even reached the Canadian Engineering Competition in 2004 and 2005. Kyle Kawanami deserves much of the credit for these Engineering achievements.

Kyle has also been a supporter of Engineering through his involvement with the Students' Union, often working to ensure passage of engineering-sponsored resolutions. Less formally, Kyle has provided the Engineering Students' Society with advice on how to navigate the student governance system.

Kyle has shown his support for the Faculty of Engineering for longer than most of us have been here, and the Engineering Students' Society would like to show our appreciation by presenting him with an honourary Golden Geer award.
