Democracy Now

So, one of the fellows from Brokeback Mooting is now the incoming President of the Law Students'Association (who should probably update their website).

It was funny listening to the Debate election speeches today, as many people's platforms advocated doing stuff that we actually used to do and just haven't done in a while. I suppose that's either a sign that I'm getting old, or was a bad President. Or both.

On the International Relations front, I'm quite interested in how all this Charles Taylor stuff is going to shake down.

Brokeback Mooting

Alright, judging by my search results, since so many visitors are clearly in search of this, here it is.

In other news, I'm reserving judgment on the Roloson deal, though I think he is an upgrade. Also, good on Canada for beating the Yanks at their own game.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Spencer's letter in this week's Gateway.

Cross Canada Report

So, taken a page out of Spencer and Jen's book, I thought I'd offer to my out of province readers the opportunity to pontificate on our SU Elections (which will be taking place Wednesday and Thursday this week, get out and vote you U of A Readers). So, same rule as Bond's blog. Information can be found here. Using only that, who would you vote for? (Insiders are welcome to comment as to who they're voting for as well).

Shameless Plug

So, I recently picked up "Modest Charms" a CD by former 1L Beth Arrison. I'd recommend it to my Edmonton readers. It's quite easy-listening and jazzy, the sort of thing that I think Nick Tam would appreciate. CDs are available at Chapters and Megatunes on Whyte. As well, there is a CD Release Party this Friday at the Yardbird Suite, with doors opening at 8:00 pm. Support a local artist (that I've gotten drunk with a couple of times)!

Golden Geer

This Saturday I received an Honourary Golden Geer from the Engineering Students' Society. It was a real honour, especially given that Golden Geers were given to people like Gary, Paul, Louis and Cole (among a number of others) who I've seen do incredible things for that faculty. I got to shake hands with the Dean of Engineering, and enjoy a great meal at the Faculty Club. Jones, Chelli and Mustafa were all there for added company. While I've never been enrolled in Engineering, and never even thought of being enrolled in Engineering, I've found the Engineers whom I've met on campus to be incredibly welcoming and interesting people. They've consistently had some of the best Councillors (From Brindle and Poon, to Jones and Weppler, to Crossman today), their programming remains top notch, and their recent focus on community outreach with events like the Head Shave is something that a number of other FAs could learn from (indeed, it was a pleasure to see Law running a similar event this year). So while I'm pretty sure that it wasn't for my handbook submissions 3 years ago (for which I was already compensated) it's good to see that some people thought that I've made a contribution to the vibrant community that is Engineering on campus.

McGoun

As alluded to by the lovely and talented Ms. Bond in the comments section, Samuel and I are now the Western Canadian Champions. The tournament was a lot of fun, and the food was excellent. It was also good to just let loose with a partner, as by the end of the tournament Samuel and I were writing pseudonyms on the board and opening our speeches with rap lines. Given that this was my last Cusid West tournament, it was also really rewarding to go out with a win. Like Pac Cup, there were a lot of blast from the past moments, be it hitting Jeff Long and Dave Cram running a crazy case (the Government should lose this round); to another Saskatchewn kegger (I did two keg stands); to watching Chris Samuel take yet another Public Speech final with another innovation. Having the Olympics on at the same time reminded me of the last time McGoun was in Saskatoon as well.
